Relais Villa Vittoria in Laglio, Lake Como

This property is a rarity on Lake Como: a good-value boutique hotel. Smaller and a tad more aristocratic than the neighboring Relais Regina Teodolinda, its sister hotel, the apricot-hued villa surveys one of the lake’s most sought-after stretches (George Clooney has a home nearby) from across a pretty garden. It features a handsome Moroccan-style spa, and the rock-hewn basement restaurant provides a striking setting for dinner (though the Mediterranean cuisine has received mixed reviews). The bedrooms have walls painted in earthy hues, whitewashed beams, and comely decor. Be sure to book one with a lake view. Rooms from $230;

Greetings from Portugal!

Staying on a gorgeous lake is half the problem solved; having an elegant boutique hotel is the other half solved :) I have made a note of your suggestion.

How long will you be in Portugal? My father introduced me to a love of Fado and he thought of retiring there. Many English people do.

Only one week in Portual, alas - half based in Lison and half based in Porto. Of course Dad should have retired here; despite the employment crisis, the weather is brilliant, the food sensational and the architecture to die for!

I had never heard of Fado until last week... Now I am a covert :)
